Asian Cities Web Quest

Tasks

Introduction | Tasks | Conclusion

You will be asked to visit websites in order to do your research and to answer the focus question:

Are Asian cities monsters or boomers?

1.

As you travel through the web quest, you will need to write a journal to be handed in at the completion.

Urbanisation is the term used to describe the movement of people from rural areas to cities, which results in a higher percentage of urban population in a country.

Visit the website, Cities of Asia.  Read "The World's Megacities: The Shift to Asia".

Now answer the following questions:

  • In which countries are the 12 largest Asian cities located?

  • What is the percentage in Asia of the combined population of the world's largest cities, in the years 2000 and 2015? (Double click on the graph)

  • When will more than half of the world's urban population be living in Asia?

2.

Now, design a tour to THREE of Asia's largest cities on the Cities of Asia Map. Choose one city in each of these regions:  East Asia, South East Asia, South Asia.

Draw a sketch map of the three cities' tour in your journal.

Click on each of your cities to find more information to enable you to answer these questions:

  • What are some problems associated with the growth of this city?

  • What are some advantages of living in this city?

  • How does this city compare with other Asian cities?
Visit Best Cities in Asia for 2000.

  • How does this city compare with an Australian city where you live or you have visited?

3.

The last part of our journey is to investigate the distinctive historical character of an Asian city:  Asia's heritage Hopes (Best Cities).

Locate one of the cities mentioned here on the map or in an atlas.  Find and record information about the importance of the city's heritage to the present quality of life of its citizens.

4.

Now, return to the focus question: Are Asian cities monsters or boomers?

In other words, are they cities where problems associated with their growth make life difficult for its population (monsters), or are they cities where opportunities outweigh the problems (boomers)?  You need to think again about urbanisation.  Why is the percentage of urban population increasing throughout the world, and especially in Asia?

Revision:

Write your answer in the journal.  Ensure you justify your answer by using evidence from the cities you have researched in your journey.

You are now ready to email the journal to your teacher.
